Dr. John Doughtie, Prebend of Westminster 1598-1672
A staunch royalist and born in Martley, he joined King Charles I at Oxford, retiring to London during the Commonwealth period. By 1662 Charles II was well re-established as monarch on the throne of England, so it would have been no surprise for a loyal churchman such as Dr. Doughtie to be awarded the stipend of Canon of Westminster. He is buried in Westminster Abbey.
