Chutney Wars

Recently research has brought to light the background to the Martley Chutney Wars.

The origins of this dispute seem to go back to the time of the Restoration of Charles II when two families - one Royalist, one Parliamentarian - argued over the
'Droit du Chutneye' - the right to make chutney in Martley.

In these cases it appears that a court ruling found in favour of the Royalist family (who lived somewhere on Martley Hillside).

Over the centuries the disputed rights disappeared into the mists of time like many of these problems do.

But it appears that in the later part of the twentieth century descendents of both families secretly returned to Martley, and have started the feud again - albeit in a more harmonious way than the 17th century.

At the present time it would appear that the family with Parliamentarian roots have gained the upper hand but the struggle continues annually - and those of you who thought that Martley Show was merely a Saturday afternoon out should realise that darker forces are at work inside the Horticultural Tent........
