Village of theYear

Whatever the outcome ( and I am holding my breathe and crossing my fingers) can I thank all the organisations who proved displays and personalities to start the two hour judging in Martley Village Hall this week.

This time we tried to vary the formula to emphasise the input of volunteers to the success of the village, and also the real sense of friendship between us all.

It was really an excellent chance to show them our worth, and it was particularly appropriate for the judges to see the hard work and commitment "on site and in action" in the rebuild of the Hall Kitchen that Niel Stammers was leading, with Harry King, Jack Bradley, Eileen Stammers.

Wichenford Gardens

I would just like to say what a fabulous day we had at Wichenford and how welcome everybody made us feel. Each garden was unique in its own way and we are certainly looking forward to returning next year. Well done to all those who organised the day (especially the weather)

Tom & May Wilcox

I was very happy to read about Tom & May Wilcox on your web page. They were no relation of mine but very great friends of my father, Gilbert Charles Davies. His mother was Nurse Clara Davies (Midwife) of Fair View Willow Road Martley. I last visited Tom & May with my father the year before Tom passed away, my father passed away in August 1993. He had been very ill and had a leg amputated, it was so nice to be able to take him to see Tom and Boy Tom also May which turned out to be the last time. We came over on holiday from Guernsey where my father was stationed with the D.C.L.I., married my mother and here I am! He lived in Guernsey from 1927 until his death in 1993.

I am working on the family tree at the moment, the TOMBS side also the DAVIES side. My grandmother was Clara Tombs and they were all around Leigh, but I do believe my Gt. Grandmother Eliza Powell as she was - then later Tombs, lived in a cottage somewhere in the region of the Admiral Rodney, I think it was Berrow green but not sure. It was where my father was born. I do have a picture of the cottage with my grandmother standing outside in her nurses uniform, also the board on the side of the house "Nurse Davies, Certified Midwife"

Thanks again for the lovely write up about Tom & May, they were indeed wonderful people with a wonderful garden and greatly loved by us all.

I have forwarded the write-up to my family in Guernsey who all visited Tom & May with my parents every year for many years.
Ruth Millar (nee Davies)
now living in Cambridgeshire.

Self Catering Holiday Cottage

I hope someone can help us. Recently our computer crashed and we lost some data. This included the details of a self-catering cottage in or near the village. Valerie's father was born and raised in Worcester and she would like to visit the area.

Unfortunately we cannot remember which company advertised the property or the name of the owners. Would it be possible for someone to kindly send me details of any such places in the hope that we can remember the property

many thanks

Richard & Valerie Wright
