Hastings & Neate families

My name is Richard Clarke of Brisbane Australia. I read with interest the article on the Hastings of Martley. My particular interest is the Neate Family. I believe Rev John Paget Hastings married Maria Leonora Neate or she may also have been known as Myra E Neate on 15/1/1818 in India. She died on 13/1/1820. A son was possibly born on 5/10/1818. I do not know his name. I have John Pagets birth as 27/9/1784 and Christening as 12/11/1784 at Sutton Coldfield, Warwick. He died about 1822 from your site information. Do you know if the son survived and who raised him? Maria's father was Major Richard Neate who was kia at Corunna in Moore's campaign. Her mother was Elizabeth and she may have remarried an Alexander Brown in about 1816, shortly before she and three daighters went to India Another followed later. I have relations in Australia who are descended from Maria's sister, Louisa, and who are therefore interested in any descendants of Louisa's siblings to whom they will be related.

My question is whether you can add to my knowledge of the Neate family as a result of your Hastings research?

Regards,

Richard Clarke

Nott Relatives

I am looking to re-connect with some relatives and hope that someone might be able to help.

My uncle and aunt are William (Billy passed away several years ago) and Moya Nott at the Upper Holling , Martley. My cousins, their children are Micheal, Judy and Christopher Nott. The only number I have is 21412 but I do not have the city code or even know if this number is still correct for the farm. My grandmother was Gertrude Nott Warman who grew up at the Upper Holling. My mother, Gertrude's daughter, was Doreen Warnan Rink, I did visit there many years ago, probably 10+ years ago but since have lost more detailed information on phone numbers, directions or the like.

Can you help me with any information about how I might be able to contact them?

Forgive me for sending this to so many email address however I did get some bounce backs from some of the addresses so instead of sending to one at a time I chose the shotgun approach.

Thank you,

Double Decker bus or Tram & the Curious Fox

Further to the item in Around and About in Martley April 2005 and the letter from Lisa Lang concerning my enquiry to Curious Fox about the time I spent in Martley in the early days of WW2.

My cousins and I were evacuated originally with a Mrs Rowley in a small cottage but I'm sure that kind lady found 4 youngsters and an elderly carer in the shape of Great Aunt Sarah more than enough to cope with and after a short time we took possession of a double-decker bus/tram and lived there for several months until eventually caring for us children also proved too much for Aunt Sarah and we returned to Smethwick in the West Midlands, shortly before the bombing started.

The bus/tram (I am still not sure which) was sited in a small triangular field and from my very distant memory the bus and our little entourage were the only occupants of the field. We had a stand-pipe for water but since I was only 9 at the time, the details of cooking, cleaning and general living conditions escaped me. Suffice to say, we were fed,.watered and cared for and thought we were in heaven, the conditions were so exciting and a far cry from the grimy sooty air of Smethwick with all the heavy industry working 24/7 in the war effort.

My abiding memory of Martley was the school (which I think must have been The Chantry School) and the kindness of the Villagers.

I did have an earlier article printed in The Villager a couple of years ago but since your correspondent, Lisa Lang has raised the subject again I am taking this opportunity to try my luck with one last appeal for anyone who might remember the bus/tram to write to me directly, or email me, if they have any information.

My thanks also to Ms Lang for showing an interest in my quest.
